Vision

What an imaginative way to interpret a portrait photo!
(Reminds me of a comic book image.) The pink and green coloring
is fluorescent,
making this piece really pop.
TECHniques
Using image-editing software to resize digital image;
using word-processing software to create text.
What You’ll Need
- Computer with image-editing software, word-processing software,
and inkjet printer
- Digital image of single subject (such as scanned portrait photo)
- 32 lb. glossy white printer paper
- Sakura Souffle 3-D Opaque Ink pen in Purple, Green, Pink, Blue;
Glaze 3-D Transparent Ink pen in Gloss Pink;
Gelly Roll Ice Cream pens in Lime Green, Yellow, Soft Pink;
Identi-Pen in Black
- Double-sided tape
- 6-3/4" square of decorative cardstock (for background)
- 8" square of black cardstock
- 3 small binder clips in colors of choice
- Epoxy sticker of choice
- Scissors
Make It Happen
- Open the digital image in image-editing software.
(Lea actually used an advertisement image for her project. How cool is that!)
Resize the image to measure no wider than 6-1/2" and no higher than 6".
Print the image on glossy white printer paper. Let the ink set for several minutes.
- Open a new document in word-processing software. Use the font face and point size of choice to type vision and pop art or desired words. (Use an open font for this—the following font faces will give you similar results: Not Too Shabby, Standout, Puffed Rice.) Print on glossy white printer paper. Let the ink set for several minutes.
- Examine the printed image and determine where the shadows and highlights naturally fall on the hair and face. Apply highlights using bright or light colors and shadows using black or dark colors. (The colors given in steps 4 through 7 are suggestions.)
- Hair. Use Lime Green and Yellow Gelly Roll pens for the highlights and the Black pen for the shadow, applying them in lines to follow the hair strands.
- Face. Divide the face in half and color the left side with the Pink Glaze pen and the right side with the Purple Souffle pen. Use a Soft Pink Gelly Roll pen for the lips and the highlight on the nose. Use the Pink Glaze pen to apply a highlight stroke to the right cheek. Use the Black pen to outline the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and lips. Use the Green Souffle pen to color the irises of the eyes.
- Body. Divide the body in half and color the left side with the Pink Glaze pen and the right side with the Purple Souffle pen. (Lea carried the purple onto the hand to add interest, coloring the nails with the Soft Pink Gelly Roll pen.)
- Color the printed words and the area around them using the Green, Purple, Pink, and Blue Souffle pens. Let dry. Cut out.
- Cut out the colored image. Use double-sided tape to attach the image and words to the decorative cardstock background. Attach the decorative cardstock to the center of the black cardstock.
- Affix the clips to the left side of the black cardstock square. Adhere the epoxy sticker to the left side of the project above the clips, slightly extending it onto the black cardstock.
